Jesus the Prophet in the Qur’an (part 2)
The Qur’an presents Jesus (ʿIsa) as one of the great messengers of God, placed within the same line of prophets who all carried one essential message: worship God alone without partners. His story is repeatedly mentioned to affirm continuity in divine revelation and to correct misunderstandings about his status.
The Qur’an instructs believers to affirm faith in all prophets equally, without distinction between them. This includes Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad ﷺ, along with all other messengers sent by God.
“Say, ‘We believe in God and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and to the prophet-descendants (of Jacob), and what has been given to Moses and Jesus, and what has been given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims (in submission) to Him.
’” (Qur’an 2:136)
“Indeed, We have revealed to you (O Muhammad) as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the prophet-descendants (of Jacob), Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and We gave the book to David.” (Qur’an 4:163)
““O people of the Scripture, do not go to extremes in your religion, and do not say about God except the truth. The Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, is only a messenger from God and a word from Him (‘Be’ and it is), which He sent to Mary, and a soul from Him. So, believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, ‘Three.’ Stop, it is better for you.
Indeed, God is one; exalted is He above having a son…” (Qur’an 4:171–172)
Jesus himself is described as calling his people to worship God alone:
“This is Jesus, the son of Mary. And this is the statement of truth, which they doubt. It is not possible for God to take a son… (Jesus said), ‘And indeed God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.’” (Qur’an 19:34–36)
“And when Jesus came with clear proofs, he said, ‘I have come to you with prophethood… Indeed, God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path.’” (Qur’an 43:63–64)
Jesus is also described as confirming the Torah and giving glad tidings of a future messenger after him:
“And when Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘O Children of Israel, I am the messenger of God to you confirming the Torah that came before me, and bringing good news of a messenger that will come after me, whose name will be Ahmad.’ But when he came to them with clear proofs, they said, ‘This is clear magic.’” (Qur’an 61:6)
The Miracles of Jesus
Jesus was supported by miracles granted by God’s permission. These signs demonstrated his prophethood and God’s power working through him.
“He spoke from the cradle, declaring his servitude to God and his mission:
“So she pointed to him. They said, ‘How can we speak to a child in the cradle?’ (Jesus) said, ‘Indeed, I am a servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am…’” (Qur’an 19:29–31)
He was also granted miracles such as healing the sick and bringing life to the dead by God’s permission, all as signs for his people.
Jesus and His Disciples
Jesus had devoted followers who supported his mission and believed in God. They responded to his call with faith and submission.
““O you who believe, champion God’s religion… The disciples said, ‘We are the champions of God’s religion.’” (Qur’an 61:14)
“And when I inspired the disciples to believe in Me and My messenger, they said, ‘We believe, and bear witness that we are Muslims (in submission to God).’” (Qur’an 5:111)
The Qur’an also mentions that among Jesus’ followers were those filled with compassion and mercy, though later generations introduced practices not originally prescribed, such as monasticism.
Conclusion
The Qur’an presents Jesus as a noble prophet and servant of God, sent with clear signs and a consistent message: worship Allah alone. He is honored, supported with miracles, and part of the unified chain of divine messengers. His message is not one of divinity, but of submission, guidance, and calling humanity to the straight path of God.
