A Journey from Darkness to Light

I feel honored to be a Muslim, and I feel that way for many reasons. There are many norms in the society I live in that are opposite to what it is to be Muslim. When I first came to this way of life, I did not know how well I would adapt. Becoming Muslim meant joining a visible minority, something I would not normally have chosen.

“

However, after learning the pure teachings of Islam, I found myself compelled to embrace it as the absolute truth.

Having spent much of my early life outside Islam, I understand the darkness that Allah describes in the Qur'an. I remember what it felt like when Allah opened my eyes and replaced that darkness with light. Before that, I had no clear or absolute source of guidance.

Searching for Purpose

Even the simplest aspects of creation left me with unanswered questions. I remember learning about evaporation in science class. I understood how the water cycle worked and why it was important for life, but I could never understand why water disappeared into the sky in the first place.

Whenever I reflected on the human body, the vast universe, or the purpose behind creation itself, I always reached the same mental barrier. Science could explain how things functioned, but never why they existed. It described the laws of nature but could not explain who established those laws or why creation exists at all.

01

I grew up in a non-practicing Christian family and was familiar with the basic teachings of Christianity. However, I never turned to it for guidance because its central beliefs never seemed logical to me.

02

As a child, I naturally believed that God was One—an absolute, all-powerful Creator. My greatest difficulty with Christianity was its understanding of God, particularly the doctrine of the Trinity. Although Christians explain this doctrine in different ways, I struggled to understand how three persons could be one God.

I also questioned why Jesus was worshipped when, according to the Bible, he spoke of the Father in Heaven as being greater than himself.

Eventually, I found myself unable to accept Christianity.

“

After rejecting Christianity, I drifted between agnosticism and atheism while continuing to believe there might be a Creator.

Without a clear purpose in life, I saw little reason to avoid destructive behavior. I became involved with alcohol and drugs, first socially and later habitually. Eventually I experimented with harder substances and even became involved in selling drugs.

Although I appeared to be living freely, I increasingly felt an emptiness inside. Deep down, I knew I was searching for something greater.

A Prayer That Changed Everything

One night, overwhelmed by questions about life and death, I turned toward the sky and made a simple prayer:

“

"God, if You are real, and You exist, please help me."

At the time, I did not realize how significant that prayer would become.

Discovering Islam

Following the events of September 11, Islam became a major topic of discussion. Until then, I knew almost nothing about the religion and had many misconceptions about it.

“

As friends debated Islam, I became curious enough to investigate for myself.

What I discovered surprised me.

I learned that Muslims worship the One God alone. I learned that they honor Jesus as a prophet and messenger of God, believe that he was not divine, and reject the idea that he should be worshipped. These beliefs immediately resonated with the understanding of God that I had always held.

Comparing the Two Faiths

My search became increasingly serious. I began reading both the Qur'an and the Bible, discussing Christianity with my grandmother and Islam with Muslim friends. I compared the evidence presented by both sides and continued searching sincerely for the truth.

“

After reading the Qur'an and reflecting upon God's signs in creation, I found myself thinking:

"It sounds so true, but can it really be true?"

At that moment I remembered my earlier prayer asking God for guidance. I realized that perhaps my prayer had been answered.

The Verse That Confirmed My Decision

Although convinced that Islam was true, I still hesitated.

“

Then I came across Matthew 26:39, where Jesus fell on his face and prayed to God.

This passage confirmed what I had learned from Islam:

  • Jesus prayed by prostrating himself before God.
  • He asked God to remove the cup of death from him.
  • He prayed to God rather than claiming to be God.

For me, this became the final confirmation I needed.

Embracing Islam

On December 28, 2001, by the mercy of Allah, I declared the Shahadah:

“

"I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

From that day onward, my life changed completely. Through Allah's guidance, I have experienced opportunities, achievements, and blessings that I never imagined possible.

Conclusion

After experiencing the sweetness of faith, I came to understand the peace and purpose that Islam brings. My journey taught me that sincere reflection, honest questioning, and seeking guidance from Allah can transform a person's life forever.

All praise belongs to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, Muhammad. Ameen.
