What Is the Status of Women in Islam
Introduction
Islam honors women and recognizes them as independent individuals with dignity, rights, and responsibilities. More than fourteen centuries ago, Islam established principles that protect a woman's identity, property, and social status. Whether she is single or married, a woman is respected as a complete individual with rights that must be preserved.
Financial Independence
One of the fundamental rights Islam grants women is financial independence. A woman has full ownership of her wealth, earnings, and property. She is free to buy, sell, give charity, offer gifts, and manage her finances without requiring permission from her father, husband, or any other guardian.
When a woman marries, the mahr (marriage gift) is given directly to her by the groom and becomes her exclusive property. She also retains her own family name after marriage, preserving her personal identity.
“The man asked, "Then who?"
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
"Your mother."
He asked again, "Then who?"
The Prophet ﷺ answered:
"Your mother."
When the man asked a fourth time, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Then your father."
(Narrated in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2548, and Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5971.)
The repetition emphasizes the immense respect, care, and gratitude owed to mothers for their sacrifices and devotion.
Conclusion
Islam presents a balanced and honorable view of women. It safeguards their financial independence, preserves their personal identity, encourages respectful and compassionate marriages, and elevates the status of mothers to one of the highest positions in society.
These teachings demonstrate that women are valued not only for their roles within the family but also as independent individuals whose rights and dignity are protected by Islamic teachings.
